Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a type of metabolic weight-loss surgery that helps severely obese patients lose weight by allowing them to feel satiated despite limited food intake,. During the procedure, about 80% of the stomach is removed. This surgery prompts hormonal changes that help with weight loss and relieve conditions that are linked to obesity, such as hypertension and heart disease. The achieved weight loss can greatly reduce the risk of developing obesity-related diseases and improve life quality.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
Laparoscopic Roux En Y Gastric Bypass
Laparoscopic Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is a type of metabolic and weight-loss surgery. It’s often done as a laparoscopic surgery, with minimally small incisions in the abdomen.

RYGB has both restrictive and malabsorptive effect. This surgery reduces the size of your upper stomach to a small pouch with volume size of 100-150ml. This limits the amount of food you can eat. The surgeon then attaches this pouch directly to part of the small intestine called the Roux limb. This forms a “Y” shape. The food you eat then bypasses the rest of the stomach and the upper part of your small intestine. This reduces the amount of fat and calories absorbed from food intake.

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty

ESG is a new weight-loss procedure known as Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG). It is an endoscopic procedure using flexible camera to reduce the size of the stomach by folding and putting multiple full-thickness stitched together. It reduces distensibility of stomach, delays gastric emptying and provides early satiety feeling for patients.

ESG can be part of a weight-loss plan to reduce the risk of obesity-related chronic illness such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatty liver disease, sleep apnea or heart disease. This procedure is especially effective when combined with behavioral therapy, exercise and dietary changes.
